INTRODUCTION The existence of closed adjective classes (henceforth CAC) has long been recognized for African languages. Although I probably haven’t found the earliest mention of this property, Welmers’ statement in African Language Structures is often quoted: “It is important to note, however, that in almost all Niger-Congo languages which have a class of adjectives, the class is rather small (...).” (Welmers 1973:250).
